11th September 2009 - The Italian Job
» Salzburg, Austria
» Werfen, Austria
» Merano, Italy
Hot cars, a lot of fun and pure action were offered by the 2009 Torpedo Run. The fifth edition of the infamous event went from Salzburg in Austria over spectacular alpine passes to Italy - true to the motto “The Italian Job”. Unforgettable experiences like exclusive race tracks, high-speed drifting, jetboat tours and culinary pleasures on the private estate of an Italian celebrity chef were offered every day.
The Torpedo Run started in pure luxury at the legendary Hotel „Schloss Fuschl“ near Salzburg, one of the „Leading Hotels of the World“, which truly deserves the award. Also the entering cars let the blood of car enthusiasts stir as they heard the engine sounds like an automobile symphony.
Among the supercars were for example one of eight strictly limited PPI Audi R8 Razor GTR, a rare Corvette ZR1 and a brand new Audi R8 V10. All the cars have been used for what they were built: driving instead of getting dusty in a showroom. On the other hand, a team in its Mercedes-Benz G 55 AMG fascinated bystanders with spontaneous off-road trips, and a Dodge Grand Caravan, which was modified to a an ambulance, was attracting attention of car lovers.
Routes through fascinating landscapes are another strength of the Torpedo Run. The way to Italy led through the high summits of the Dolimit Alps with its bizarre rock formations and over gigantic alpine passes, which wind through the breathtaking mountains. The pure thrill was outlined by bold serpentines, superb views and sharp summits. The actual altitude of our trip was shown by reaching the snow line in the late summer. Yes, there was ice and snow everywhere – only the roads were clear constantly.
After the sparkling driving pleasure the first overnight stay was in the luxurious Steigenberger Hotel in Meran, which delighted everyone with its design concept by star-designer Matteo Thun, the huge water playground and the wellness-oasis. Because of its special geographic position Meran is blessed with a typical mild mediterranean climate. Even palms grow here, although Meran is located in the alps. After a gourmet menu with several courses, the satiated teams hit the nightlife.
